Our Survey

My friend, Ben, and I created a survey to find out student's opinions on matters involving lunch were. The demographics did not help us with trying to figure out what people's view on the school lunches were, but they did help give us an idea of what type of people are taking our survey. I feel that we would not have to change much in our survey, maybe a little bit of wording, because for the most part the survey had the students answer all questions we needed information about. There was no real difference between boys and girls answers. Both genders felt the same about matter for the most part and the same amount of each gender brought and bought lunch. The one question that was most telling from our survey is that all but one or two students believed that if a student has a car they should be able to leave school grounds to get their lunch. A summary of our results are majority bring lunch, at home students usually have sandwiches for lunch, students want microwaves at the school, and finally students want to be able to use their cars to get lunch. I enjoyed working with Ben and getting our work done quickly and efficiently. I also liked how we gave our own survey out to our peers who gave honest answers.

Amateurism In the NCAA

A question among all middle school and high school students who desire to play sports in college is, what is more important, education or sports? And the answer really depends on what division you play in. There are three divisions in NCAA. In the third division, a student athletes priority is their education. If the student has a mandatory test or project or any type of important assignment, that student athlete is able to be excused from their team's practice, game, or tournament. As the divisions get more prestigious the athletics take more priority over the education. In division 1 athletics are the main priority. Although the NCAA preaches the balance between athletics and education among all three of their divisions, it's clear that the first division is more about athletics. The same freedom division three student athletes have with being excused from practices or games is not allowed, and even shamed upon, in the first division.

The NCAA also cares a lot about amateurism and making sure the only type of athlete in their divisions are amateur athletes. There are specific boundaries between amateur and professional athletes, and if that boundary is crossed in any way there are certain penalties and suspensions. the definition of amateur is: a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reason. The requirements that an amateur athlete must have are:

  1. Contracts with professional teams
  2. Salary for participating in athletics
  3. Prize money that exceeds actual and necessary expenses
  4. Play with professionals
  5. Trying out, practicing, or competing with a professional team
  6. Benefits from and agent or prospective agent
  7. Agreeing to be represented by an agent
  8. Delayed initial full-time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized sports competition

Chapter 3 Scavenger Hunt

For the scavenger hunt the easiest part was finding the conference Indiana University is in and how old that conference is. The most fun part was learning about the Olympics, both summer and winter. I liked working with a partner because we were able to do the work a lot more efficiently, and if you needed help with one question you had someone else who could help you out. I would not have wanted to work alone because answering all 25 questions would have taken a lot longer. I feel this was a fair assessment of chapter 3. This was fair because chapter 3 is all about sports marketing and types of sports, and the questions cover everything from different types of sports to jobs that are available relating to sports.

Piracy is the reproduction of someone's work without their consent. This happens in sports and entertainment all the time. People will illegally record movies or sporting events and sell the copies. This is very illegal and the consequences if caught can be very large. There are examples of piracy everywhere. We will just look at some.

Sony-          Recently Sony has been hit hard by piracy. Five movies were stolen by hackers and four of those movies had not even come out yet at that time. One of the movies was "Annie", and that still is not in theaters. Another movie was Fury. Annie has already been downloaded at least 200,000 times already. Fury is the second most pirated movie only behind "Guardians of the Galaxy" by Marvel. The Hack group calls themselves the Guardians of peace. The other movies that have not been released yet but were pirated were "Still Alice", "Mr. Turner", and "To Write Love on Her Arms".

MGM-          A court ruling was made recently over whether or not streaming websites could share movies and music from person to person without the products being paid by each person. The ruling went in favor of MGM nine votes to none and the acts by these websites were seen as acts of piracy and the company was able to protect their products.
